The first Trans national meeting in the SCATE project.

Report from the Östersund seminar

3 - 5 of March 2005

Program and participant list.

Day one, 3th of March

The seminar began with an “icebreaker”, an easy method to get acquainted.

Everybody got some papers and a pen and was asked to walk around in the room, like at a cocktail party. When two people met both stopped, to draw a picture of each other, without looking at the paper just at each other. While drawing there was time to talk and introduce ask questions. When the painting was completed, the name of the model was written on it. The “model” got the drawing, and this way each person got at least three portraits. In the next step, everyone was to choose the drawing they thought best showed his/hers personality, and use this to introduce him/herself to the whole group. These drawings were put on the wall in the conference room, where they hanged during the whole meeting. You can se the result here: 1 2 3

Then Hélène introduced the DFU = Participant Formulated Evaluation (PFE), which often is used in study circles in ABF, as a method to learn about the groups expectations etc.

We continued with a presentation of the local partners:

Giovanni presented Provincia di Genoa

Claudio and Susanna (interpreter) presented Job Center

Bernadette Thomas presented Cité des Metiérs

Jonathan Kaplan presented, APP- network

Valentina presented Znanie Bulgaria

ABF Östersund: Rosalie presented ABF and she also told us a little about

Facts on liberal adult education in Sweden

Lars - talked about Equal to Local union popular adult education

Micke - talked about Culture activities in ABF and

Hélène - talked about Education for study circle leaders

After the lunch break, Rita presented the SCATE project which you find on the ppt presentation.

In the next session Rosalie talked about “What is the essence of a study circle in Sweden“ which you can read more about at ”What is a study circle” and Regulations and economy for “non-fee” groups and organisations affiliated to ABF.

The day ended with a reception at the Town Hall in Östersund (built in 1912). The “vice mayor” Ann-Sofie Andersson welcomed us and gave a guided tour in the old building. She also told us a little about the town district of Östersund. Then she invited us to a “smorgasbord” with special products and dishes from the province of Jämtland. Pictures from the Town hall.

Day two, Friday 4th of March

In the morning session, Rosalie carried on with the subject:”What is the essence of a study circle in Sweden” (the session was recorded.) and there was time for more questions and discussions.

Rosalie also talked about Flexible learning - study circles on Internet, and had an introduction to Folkbildning.net and First Class (FC). Every one got their FC password, and in a computer Hall, at Folkets Hus, all got a chance to test FC. Afterwards, it was decided that FC is the tool we will use for future SACTE work over Internet.

This day we had our lunch outdoor, on the ice of Storsjön (the Great Lake). It was a sunny, but windy day, so it was quite cold, but nobody complained. The participants were served genuine products from the county of Jämtland. Click here to see the menu.

For those who wanted to try ice fishing, AnnaCarin showed how to do it. Unfortunately we did not get any fish. Here are some pictures

After lunch the whole group visited ABF Z, and some study circles in action: mathematic and English. In one of the circles the participants belonged to a member organisation RSMH, for mentally disordered, and they showed us a movie which they had produced called ”The last scream”. It is about the public’s attitude towards people with different handicap. (The movie is available on CD from ABF). We also got a chance to look at the locations for circles in oil painting, sewing and computer.

Later, Ylva de Val, talked about, and showed us a power point presentation of a project called Online, produced by ABF Ångermanland. A project that focused on How to get people to move to, and tourists to visit the rural districts.

Our next visit was at the Lärcentrum - “Learning Centre” in Östersund, where Håkan Lundmark showed us around, and together with his colleges told us a little about their work.

The evening was free for private activities.

Day three, Saturday 5th of March

Rita and Fulvia bean the day with a presentation of Time Banks. To give an example on how the idea of “Time Banks” works, we made our own Time Bank. Everybody was told to write down three things that we wanted help with, i.e. cleaning the house, massage, cutting the lawn…. And, three things that we could offer to the bank, i.e. walking some body’s dog, cleaning windows, help someone with shopping… Our group discovered that many of us could exchange favours with each other!

Before lunch we took a trip to the city to buy souvenirs and local produced products like lingonberries jam (lingon sylt).

After lunch Jonathan presented Trees of knowledge.

We ended this seminar with a summary and an evaluation using the PFE.

You can see the result of the PFE here.

The result of the PEF shows that everybody was quite satisfied, in other words that we reached our goals and expectations for this seminary.
